LG Electronics (LG) has launched the LG V40ThinQ, a new smartphone with five cameras. Designed for today’s multimedia storytellers, the device is marketed as a powerful tool for content creation.

Staying true to the V series design, the LG V40ThinQ boasts an enhanced 6.4" FullVision OLED display with even slimmer bezels. It runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform, coupled with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, promising a superior smartphone camera experience.
The smartphone features a triple-lens rear camera system with a 16 MP super wide-angle lens, a 12 MP standard angle lens, and a 12 MP telephoto lens. This setup allows users to frame shots from various perspectives without repositioning themselves. The super wide-angle lens captures expansive views, while the telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom (3.2x zoom compared to the wide-angle lens) captures clear images of distant subjects.
The Triple Shot feature combines images captured by all three lenses into a short, shareable video.
The front camera features a 5 MP wide-angle lens and an 8 MP standard angle lens that work together to produce a bokeh effect. Users can adjust the background blur using an on-screen slider. Additional features allow for selfie customization with unique lighting and effects.
The main rear camera sensor has been enhanced with a 40% larger pixel size compared to the LG V30+, increasing from 1 μm to 1.4 μm. The image sensor itself is over 18% larger than its predecessor. The _f_1.5 aperture of the main camera allows for a shallower depth of field, faster shutter speed, and improved burst mode compared to the LG V30+.
The smartphone also boasts Dual PDAF (phase detection autofocus) for 50% faster automatic focusing, which is twice the industry average. The advanced HDR feature analyzes and adjusts exposure settings for perfectly lit images, preventing overexposed backgrounds or underexposed subjects. The camera continually checks sharpness until the shutter button is pressed, ensuring subjects remain in focus.
LG has further enhanced the camera in the LG V40ThinQ to optimize color accuracy, composition, white balance, and shutter speed. The artificial intelligence (AI) CAM introduces AI Composition, which uses the phone’s intelligence to suggest alternative shots to the user. AI Auto White Balance adjusts the color temperature based on the lighting conditions, while AI Shutter selects the appropriate shutter speed, which is particularly beneficial when photographing moving subjects.
Additional features such as Cine Shot, 3D Light Effect, Makeup Pro, Custom Backdrop, and Story Shot further elevate the photography experience on the LG V40ThinQ.
Cine Shot simplifies the creation of cinemagraphs, images with animation. Users can record a short video using any of the rear cameras and then “paint” the area to be animated.
3D Light Effect adds professional lighting effects to images.
Makeup Pro enables users to enhance their selfies with various looks.
Custom Backdrop allows users to change the background of their selfies.
Story Shot lets users create composite photos by selecting a background image from their gallery or capturing a new one, then overlaying selfies onto it.
Continuing its legacy of delivering high-fidelity audio, LG has equipped the V40ThinQ with Audio Tuned by Meridian, making it the first LG phone to carry this distinction. The 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) delivers balanced sound that’s remarkably close to the original recording.
The Boombox Speaker feature, first introduced on the LG G7+ThinQ, amplifies bass by using the phone’s internal space as a resonance chamber. Placing the LG V40ThinQ on a solid surface further enhances the bass effect.
The LG V40ThinQ maintains the slim and lightweight design of the V series, weighing 169 g and measuring 7.7 mm in thickness. Its minimalist design features clean lines and sophisticated colors. The Silky Blast process etches microscopic pits into the tempered glass back, creating a smooth, matte finish resistant to fingerprints and stains. Like its predecessor, the LG V40ThinQ is IP68 rated.
“With the LG V40ThinQ, creating and sharing high-quality content has never been easier for the prosumer,” said Shawn Han, MD, LG Electronics Singapore. “The five cameras offer incredible versatility, and with the camera’s artificial intelligence capabilities, users can take stunning photographs that stand out on social media platforms.”
