Sony Mobile Communications (Sony Mobile) has introduced new consumer experiences centered around innovation.
“Xperia Touch represents a groundbreaking interface," stated Hiroki Totoki, President and CEO of Sony Mobile Communications. “A year after revealing our updated brand direction and vision for the future of communications, we are not only introducing the Xperia XZ Premium, packed with cutting-edge technologies to improve core smartphone features, but also creating entirely new interactive communication experiences with our Xperia Smart Products.”
The company has expanded its premium lineup with the addition of the Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia XZs smartphones. The Xperia XA1 and Xperia XA1 Ultra join the brand’s super mid-range offerings. All four new X-Series smartphones will be launched in Singapore.
Hideyuki Furumi, EVP, Global Sales & Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications, shared, “We have continuously evolved and transformed our smartphone portfolio, relentlessly focused on delivering the most advanced technology in elegantly designed products. Whether it’s a memory-stacked camera system capable of super slow motion capture or the world’s first 4K HDR smartphone display, we’re providing experiences that connect with users in emotionally resonant and meaningful ways like never before.”

The Xperia XZ Premium boasts Sony’s innovative Motion Eye camera system, enabling advanced features and exceptional image quality. It also features the world’s first 4K HDR display (5.5”). The Motion Eye camera captures and plays back super slow-motion video at 960 frames per second (fps), four times slower than any other smartphone. The Xperia XZ Premium will be available globally in Luminous Chrome and Deepsea Black starting in late spring 2017 (around the first or second quarter).
The flagship Xperia XZs variant offers the same redesigned Motion Eye camera in a 5.2” form factor for select markets. It will launch in April 2017 and comes in Ice Blue, Warm Silver, and Black.
The Xperia XA1 and the 6" XA1 Ultra feature a borderless design with edge-to-edge screens. Both will exceed camera expectations with high-end rear camera specs, including 23MP sensors and low-light capabilities. The XA1 Ultra is designed for selfie enthusiasts, featuring a 16MP front camera. Both smartphones will launch in spring 2017 with Android Nougat pre-installed and a choice of modern finishes: White, Black, Pink, and Gold.
Xperia Touch, equipped with Sony’s SXRD projection display technology, is an interactive projector that transforms any flat surface into a 23” HD touchscreen. It offers both horizontal and vertical ultrashort-throw projection, enabling group interaction around a table or on a flat wall for activities like playing games, watching videos, or connecting on social media. The responsive interface detects touch through a combination of infrared light and real-time detection via its built-in camera at a rate of 60 fps.
The Xperia Touch is compatible with PlayStation 4 Remote Play, along with any app or game downloadable from the Google Play Store. The home screen interface displays real-time weather information, a memo board for sketches or video notes, calendar access, and a portal for Skype video conferencing. It will initially be available in Europe starting in spring 2017, with a suggested retail price of €1,499.
The Xperia Ear “Open-style CONCEPT” utilizes open-ear audio technology developed by Sony’s Future Lab Program, an incubator that allows consumers to experience and influence prototypes from Sony’s R&D division. Leveraging Sony’s acoustics research and expertise, the product provides wireless ‘open-ear’ stereo headphones, allowing users to enjoy music and receive notifications while remaining aware of their surroundings.

The Xperia Ear “Open-style CONCEPT” incorporates two spatial acoustic conductors and driver units that work together to transmit sound directly into the ear canal. Similar to the Xperia Ear, the Xperia Ear “Open-style CONCEPT” is powered by Sony Agent Technology, a personal assistant that employs conversational voice interaction and head gestures to help users accomplish tasks.
Sony Mobile plans to continue developing new features to enhance the in-ear assistant’s capabilities. One such example is Anytime Talk, a new voice chat service. This feature will enable users to initiate group conversations in real-time without searching through contacts or dialing a number—a simple button press or head movement will suffice. A beta version will be released for the first-generation Xperia Ear in the upcoming months.
