To celebrate the Year of the Tiger and the values of family and community central to the holiday, Singtel has released its annual Chinese New Year short film. The Hunt for the Lucky Tiger is the third installment in a series of films by Singtel featuring the amusing rivalry between two families.

The film highlights practical applications of 5G technology, like the autonomous drone systems from Garuda Robotics. These systems are currently being tested at the 5G@Sentosa testbed, a joint effort between the Government Technology Agency (GovTech), the Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC), and Singtel.

The film takes place during the pandemic, with the Ang and Huang families (dressed in red and yellow, their names’ respective colors in Chinese dialects) choosing a staycation on Sentosa Island over traveling abroad. Their rivalry is reignited when they end up at the same hotel on the 5G-powered island.

As part of their staycation, both families sign up for the same treasure hunt which leads to a comedic clash of wits and skills as they compete to find an augmented reality lucky tiger.

Their competition continues with an intense, remote-controlled car race powered by Singtel’s 5G network. The race showcases the impressive, lag-free control offered by 5G as the designated drivers from each family expertly maneuver their cars.

The competition takes a serious turn when Ah Boy, the youngest Ang son, disappears during the treasure hunt. The families put aside their differences to find Ah Boy, with his worried mother at the center of their efforts. Mr. Ang even utilizes a search and rescue drone from Garuda Robotics. He’s able to direct the drone and view live video footage from its camera on his mobile device, all thanks to 5G.

Lian Pek, Singtel’s VP of Group Strategic Communications and Brand, remarked, “Chinese New Year emphasizes family, friends, and relationships, much like Singtel celebrates the spirit of connection. As we celebrate with loved ones, the film serves as a timely reminder to appreciate our relationships, particularly after the challenges of recent global events.”

Pek continued, “As we enter a new year, this film provides a glimpse into the future, showcasing how 5G technology can support Singapore’s economic recovery and transition to a digital economy. As a frontrunner in 5G innovation, we’re excited to give audiences a look at what’s possible with augmented reality entertainment and drone applications powered by hyperconnectivity.

“5G has the potential to transform how we experience and manage various aspects of our lives and work, and we aim to empower the community by harnessing the advantages of this cutting-edge technology.”

Singtel has achieved 75% 5G coverage and has been recognized by Ookla as having Singapore’s fastest 5G network for the second consecutive time.
