This year’s film, Leading Through Uncertainty, spotlights several of the nation’s top athletes who represented Singapore at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. It chronicles the athletes’ journey to the Games amidst the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the 2020 Games.
The film features Olympic medalist swimmer Joseph Schooling, badminton player Loh Kean Yew, fencer Kiria Tikanah, and sprinter Shanti Pereira. It offers a candid look at their anxieties and vulnerabilities as they navigate training, showcasing the resilience of the human spirit.
The four athletes share their experiences over the previous 18 months and how they prepared for the Olympics despite the uncertainty surrounding the event. While they faced challenges maintaining their physical and mental strength over time, they gained a deeper understanding of what it truly means to win - going beyond medals to encompass resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity.
Schooling eloquently states in the film, “A winner is a person who can look adversity in its face. We’re all going to go through a lot of adverse moments in our careers, and each time hurdles appear, hundreds of people crumble. But the people who can go over hurdle after hurdle during their entire career –these are the true winners.”
Echoing this sentiment, Loh adds, “A winner is someone who doesn’t give up. You only fail if you stop trying. As long as you keep trying, you’re a winner.”
Aileen Tan, Singtel’s Group Chief People and Sustainability Officer, remarks, “Our athletes’ journey to the Olympics has been nothing short of inspiring. Qualifying for the Games in any given year is a remarkable feat, but achieving it under the current circumstances requires immense grit and determination. As we commemorate our second National Day in the shadow of COVID, the film is a tribute to the resilient Singapore spirit that has carried us through."
“We have all been battling this challenge, staying positive, and progressing despite COVID, much like our athletes. Although the journey has been filled with uncertainty, setbacks, and unexpected turns, we hope this film will encourage us to persevere and keep striving.”
Tan elaborates, “Supporting our national athletes has always been a core commitment for us as a homegrown company and invested community member. Our dedication to sports is also evident in our unique programming on Singtel TV, enjoyed by generations of Singaporeans.”
Singtel TV subscribers can access live coverage of the Tokyo Olympics on all 14 Mediacorp channels (Singtel TV CH 21-34) and Singtel TV GO for free. Non-Singtel customers can also access the coverage on Singtel CAST.
