Shopee, a mobile-first social marketplace owned by Garena Interactive Holding, is launching its first-ever 9.9 Mobile Shopping Day. This one-day event will take place on September 9th and offer shoppers a mobile shopping experience.
The event is anticipated to be the largest mobile shopping sale in the region. Shoppers in Singapore can expect 24 hours of continuous deals and promotions. These include discounts of up to 90%, a selection of items under S$0.99, and a chance to win Samsung Galaxy phones.
Shopee’s CEO, Chris Feng, highlighted Singapore’s leading position in global smartphone adoption, making it a prime location for this mobile-centric shopping event. He emphasized that Shopee 9.9 Mobile Shopping Day represents a new era of shopping, where convenience and accessibility are paramount.
Since its launch across Southeast Asia and Taiwan in December 2015, Shopee has seen remarkable growth across all markets. With over 20 million installs, 250,000 daily orders, and an annual gross merchandise value of US$1.3 billion, Shopee has rapidly become the fastest-growing marketplace in the region. Shopee Singapore alone has achieved over 1 million installs.
Supporting Shopee’s focus on mobile commerce, studies show a high smartphone penetration rate in Singapore, reaching 85%. While e-commerce is predicted to grow by 13% annually, m-commerce is expected to surge even higher at 15%. A 2015 report by MasterCard indicated that 49% of Singaporeans have made purchases using mobile phones, a number that continues to rise.
Feng emphasized that Singapore’s mobile transformation is evident, echoing trends seen across the region. He believes that Shopee’s mobile-first strategy has been instrumental in its success, with September 9th marking a significant milestone in celebrating this achievement.
Feng also pointed out a notable consequence of the mobile revolution: the growing preference for live chat interactions between buyers and sellers. Buyers appreciate the direct communication, using it to inquire about products and seek post-sale assistance. Shopee has facilitated over 430 million chats across the region, averaging 30 new chats every second.
