In 1958, as Alaska and Hawaii were close to becoming states, a high school history teacher in Ohio tasked his students with redesigning the American flag. Robert Heft, who was 16 at the time, received a B- on his project. Undeterred, he sent his fabric design to the White House, and President Eisenhower selected it. Unsurprisingly, Heft’s grade was quickly changed to an A.
It’s true that Heft’s design wasn’t drastically different—it simply featured 50 stars instead of 48. However, out of thousands of submissions, Heft’s was the only one crafted from actual cloth, which caught Eisenhower’s attention. Inspired by this story, I’ve compiled a collection of unique 4th of July Instagram captions to help you stand out on social media.
