Kampong Glam, the first neighborhood in Singapore to embrace digital technology, has introduced five initial projects to help its traditional businesses thrive in the digital world.

This neighborhood revitalization project, spearheaded by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), involves collaboration with Enterprise Singapore, One Kampong Gelam (OKG) association, and the Singapore Malay Chambers of Commerce and Industry (SMCCI). Its objective is to make the neighborhood more attractive to tech-savvy shoppers and tourists seeking immersive retail experiences, while enabling businesses to increase their productivity through technology. Around 150 businesses are already experiencing the positive effects of this transformation.

Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim, a Member of Parliament representing the Jalan Besar Group, has taken on the role of special advisor for the Kampong Glam digital transformation project. In this capacity, he will interact with key partners and provide direction for the neighborhood’s digital development, setting priorities for its digital future.

This initial phase of the neighborhood’s transformation involves five digital strategies:

- Simplified transactions through e-payments.

- Enhanced business visibility with digital map listings and virtual tours of stores.

- An augmented reality navigation tool with digital marketing features, guiding visitors through the neighborhood.

- Making shopping easier and more enjoyable with convenient and affordable delivery options, allowing customers to “shop without shopping bags.”

- A streamlined point-of-sale system to boost business efficiency.

Given the early success in helping businesses establish online listings and virtual tours on platforms like Google Maps, a memorandum of intent was signed at the launch by Temasek Polytechnic (TP) School of Business, IMDA, and OKG. This agreement aims to increase the participation of TP students in supporting businesses on their digitalization journey.

To further enhance Kampong Glam’s digital landscape, OKG is collaborating with stakeholders to explore new ideas for the next phase of transformation. These potential advancements include widespread outdoor Wi-Fi coverage, intelligent digital signage, Internet of Things-based visual identifiers, a unified social media brand identity, and enhanced e-commerce capabilities.

“It’s encouraging to see Kampong Glam’s merchants embrace digital solutions. While most recognize the advantages of going digital, they often need assistance taking the first step. This is where associations, industry partners, and government agencies play a vital role by providing the necessary resources and support. The appointment of Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim, Member of Parliament for the Jalan Besar Group Representation Constituency, as special advisor to the project will provide a familiar and supportive presence on the ground, guiding merchants on their digital journey.

“The launch of these Phase 1 initiatives is just the beginning. Through collaborative efforts between the community, public, and private sectors, forging mutually beneficial partnerships, I am confident that merchants will embrace even more innovative digital solutions. This will lead to an even more enriching visitor experience in Kampong Glam and expanded business opportunities,” stated S Iswaran, Singapore’s Minister for Communication and Information.

“To thrive in today’s digital economy, all businesses, including traditional ones, must embrace digital transformation. We are enthusiastic about collaborating with our partners to introduce new digital solutions to Kampong Glam and help more people discover this hidden gem of a neighborhood. Businesses now have access to more tools to engage their customers with a seamless experience that blends the physical and digital, positioning them to capitalize on growth opportunities in a rapidly evolving business landscape,” commented Jane Lim, Assistant Chief Executive, Sector Transformation Group, IMDA.

“Kampong Glam holds a special place in the hearts of many Singaporeans. It possesses a rich tapestry of history and culture, complemented by modern retail outlets and contemporary dining experiences. Strengthening our digital presence helps our merchants connect better with younger locals and international visitors, allowing them to experience our distinctive blend of retail and cultural heritage,” said Saeid Labaffi, Chairman of OKG.

“Our goal is to empower businesses to flourish, and for traditional merchants, embracing technology is crucial for unlocking significant growth potential,” explained Azhar Othman, Chairman of the SME Centre@SMCCI. “This is where our advisors play a vital role, working closely with merchants to guide them through the process of establishing an online presence.”

“As the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds continue to blur, our small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) must adapt by embracing new perspectives and digital skills. This will enable them to fully participate in this dynamic economy. Embarking on this digital journey will empower businesses to engage more effectively with their customers, not just within Kampong Glam, but beyond its borders. This presents new opportunities to showcase the distinctive offerings of our SME merchants and connect with new customers,” emphasized Chew Mok Lee, Assistant Chief Executive Officer, Industry Clusters, Enterprise Singapore.
