Huawei is advancing while other smartphone vendors are trying to catch up

Huawei’s consumer division introduces the Mate 20 smartphone series, emphasizing a blend of aesthetics and innovation. This lineup offers various sizes and models, including the Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20 X, and the Porsche Design Mate 20 RS. Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, highlights the series’ role as a digital companion, enhancing users’ lives through advanced technology.

Design

The Mate 20 series prioritizes comfortable one-hand use, with nature-inspired design elements. The Mate 20 Pro boasts an eight-sided curved chassis and an “invisible” speaker grille. A distinctive square, reminiscent of car headlights, houses the Leica Triple Camera system and flash. The series introduces a new Emerald Green color and a textured Hyper Optical Pattern for enhanced grip and fingerprint resistance. The Porsche Design Mate 20 RS combines premium materials with motorsport-inspired aesthetics, featuring a unique glass strip on its back.

Display

Continuing the Mate Series tradition, all models have a high screen-to-body ratio. The Mate 20 features a minimized Dewdrop notch, maximizing screen space.

Security

The Porsche Design Mate 20 RS uses dual biometric identification, combining 3D facial recognition with fingerprint scanning for enhanced security.

Processor

At the heart of the Mate 20 series is the Kirin 980, Huawei’s most powerful system-on-a-chip (SoC). This 7nm chip integrates 6.9 billion transistors and features a three-tier architecture with two ultra-large, two large, and four small cores. This design optimizes performance and battery life across different tasks.

The Kirin 980 offers substantial improvements over its predecessor, the Kirin 970. It boasts a 75% faster CPU, a 46% faster GPU, and a 226% faster neural processor unit (NPU). Additionally, it provides significantly higher efficiency across CPU, GPU, and NPU.

The Kirin 980 is the first to incorporate Cortex-A76 cores and a Dual-NPU for superior on-device AI processing, enabling a wide range of AI applications.

Connectivity

The Mate 20 Pro leads the way with 4.5G LTE Cat. 21 support, delivering download speeds up to 1.4 Gbps. It also boasts the fastest Wi-Fi speeds, reaching 1,733 Mbps for downloads. Dual-band GPS and AI-assisted satellite selection enhance location accuracy.

Battery

Battery life is a key feature, combining a large battery capacity with fast charging options. The Mate 20 has a 4,000 mAh battery, while the Mate 20 Pro has a 4,200 mAh battery.

The 40W HUAWEI SuperCharge technology charges the Mate 20 to 58% in 30 minutes and the Mate 20 Pro to 70% in the same time.

The Mate 20 Pro introduces 15W wireless fast charging and reverse wireless charging, allowing it to charge other compatible devices.

The Porsche Design Mate 20 RS also benefits from the 40W and 15W fast charging solutions for its 4,200 mAh battery.

The Mate 20 X distinguishes itself with a 5,000 mAh battery and a novel cooling system combining graphene film and a vapor chamber. This setup ensures sustained performance during demanding tasks like gaming.

Camera

The Mate 20 series introduces the Matrix Camera System, featuring a Leica Triple Camera setup with an ultra-wide-angle lens for expansive shots and macro photography.

The camera system consists of a 12MP main lens, an 8MP telephoto lens, and a 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens, covering a focal length range comparable to a 16-270mm zoom lens. The macro mode captures sharp images of objects as close as 2.5cm.

The AI-powered Night Mode enhances low-light photography with improved stabilization and dynamic range. The upgraded AI recognizes over 1,500 scenarios and 25 categories, automatically optimizing camera settings.

The Mate 20 Pro features a 40MP main camera, a 20MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and an 8MP telephoto camera, providing a versatile photography experience.

New video features include AI Portrait Color for isolating and highlighting subjects in videos, AI Spotlight Reel for creating highlight montages, and AI video zoom for automatic subject tracking.

The Mate 20 Pro and Porsche Design Mate 20 RS offer 3D Face Unlock, using a 3D Depth Sensing Camera System for fast and secure authentication. This system also enables more natural portrait beautification effects.

Real-time translation is enhanced with Huawei’s in-house AI technology.

Operating system

The Mate 20 series runs on EMUI 9, a customized version of Android P. EMUI 9 offers a smooth, optimized user experience with simplified navigation, a streamlined settings menu, and new gesture controls.

AI features in EMUI 9 include object identification and calorie counting. The 3D Live Object Modeling feature allows users to create and interact with digital avatars.

HUAWEI Share 3.0 enables seamless file transfer between smartphones and PCs, making cross-device sharing fast and effortless.

PC replacement

The Mate 20 can project presentations, games, or videos onto a larger screen while maintaining phone functionality and privacy.

Versatility

The Mate 20 Pro is IP68 rated for water and dust resistance. It also supports nano memory cards with up to 256GB of storage.

Availability

The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are available in Twilight, Emerald Green, Midnight Blue, and black. The Porsche Design Mate 20 RS comes in black.

The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will be available in Singapore starting October 27. The Mate 20 X will be available in select markets. The HUAWEI Watch GT and PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate 20 RS will launch in Singapore later in November.
