Golden Village Multiplex is the first cinema chain in Singapore to offer Auro 11.1 by Barco, an immersive 3D sound technology.
Long, Long Time Ago portrays Singapore approximately 50 years in the past.
Audiences can experience Auro 11.1 at Golden Village Suntec City in Singapore with the debut of Jack Neo’s newest Chinese New Year film, Long, Long Time Ago (我们的故事), premiering February 4th. To fully utilize this immersive audio technology, the film was mixed at Galaxy Studios Belgium specifically for Auro 11.1.
Taking place in the mid-to-late 1960s, shortly after Singapore achieves independence, the story centers on Zhaodi, a widow who returns to live with her parents in a Kampong. As Zhaodi, played by Aileen Tan, strives to create a better life for herself and her children, the film highlights significant moments in Singapore’s history, including its first elections.
Jack Neo discusses his choice to incorporate Auro 11.1 by Barco.
The film provides a nostalgic look back at life in Singapore during those early decades, complete with kampong life, floods, conflicts, misunderstandings, and the challenges faced by the diverse ethnicities at the time. Those who experienced Singapore’s early years will find the film particularly evocative. Mark Lee excels as Ah Kun, Zhaodi’s determined and outspoken younger brother, while Suhaimi Yusof adds humor as Osman.
Director Jack Neo emphasized how Auro 11.1 by Barco intensifies the flood and fight scenes, placing viewers right in the middle of the action.
Whether viewing at Golden Village Suntec City or another cinema, be sure to stay for the end credits, which feature childhood photos of the cast and young photos of prominent Singaporean business figures.

Auro 11.1 by Barco utilizes three speaker layers to deliver sound from all directions, including above the audience, resulting in a captivating cinematic experience. Sebastian Fong, Golden Village Multiplex’s Manager of Projection Management, notes, “Visuals have advanced dramatically in recent years, while audio technology has progressed more gradually. This makes the arrival of Auro 11.1 by Barco a significant leap in cinema sound. Recognizing that impeccable audio constitutes 50% of the movie experience, we take immense pride in being the first cinema operator in Singapore to introduce Auro 11.1.”
Wilfried van Baelen explains his inspiration for creating Auro technology.
Wilfried van Baelen, CEO of Auro Technologies, adds that Auro 11.1 by Barco reproduces subtle “3D reflections” frequently absent in current sound systems. Unlike systems with speakers limited to a horizontal plane and directly overhead, Auro 11.1 by Barco utilizes a three-axis speaker arrangement (x=width, y=depth, z=height) and three vertical layers (surround, height, top), achieving natural, realistic sound reproduction.
Currently, over 125 films use this innovative technology. Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation, has praised Auro 11.1 for providing moviegoers with an unparalleled cinematic experience. DreamWorks Animation’s latest release, Kung Fu Panda 3, is currently playing in theaters equipped with Auro 11.1 by Barco.
Eddie Tan, General Manager of South East Asia Entertainment for Barco, states, “Auro 11.1 by Barco represents the pinnacle of cinema audio, allowing you to fully experience every boom, swoop, and whisper. This technology elevates the movie experience to an unparalleled adventure, giving film enthusiasts a compelling reason to enjoy movies in theaters rather than at home. We express our gratitude to Golden Village for this partnership and for introducing Auro 11.1 in Singapore.”
