Last night, Upland experienced its first frost of the season, a typical occurrence for this time of year. This initial frost eliminates less resilient plants, often followed by a frost-free period lasting several days or weeks. It’s advisable to shield any vulnerable vegetables that you hope to preserve for a longer harvest.

Our main concerns were the tomatoes and peppers. Marlene gathered all the peppers yesterday evening, and I took measures to safeguard the tomato trellis.

No frost on the tomato trellis.

This particular tomato trellis has yielded a substantial harvest this year. It’s the same one featured in This YouTube video. I used a combination of painter’s drop cloths, light-blocking plastic, tire sidewalls, and clothespins for protection—whatever it takes to ensure the tomatoes survive!
