Returning for its 16th year, the Canon PhotoMarathon XVI is scheduled for July 28th in Singapore. This year, Canon is expanding the event by incorporating community support and introducing new competition elements.

Building upon Canon’s ongoing support of local sports, Canon recently announced a partnership with Olympian Joseph Schooling. In line with the Canon PhotoMarathon’s goal to inspire and connect the photography community, Schooling will reveal one of the competition themes at the event.

Central to Canon’s corporate philosophy is Kyosei (共生), meaning “living and working together for the common good.” Embracing this value, all registration fees from this year’s Canon PhotoMarathon will be donated to The Straits Times Pocket Money Fund (STSPMF). This community project supports school-aged children from low-income families.

“This year, we want to encourage the photography community to challenge their creativity while giving back to the community,” shared Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Domestic Operations, Canon Singapore.

“The Canon PhotoMarathon is more than just a contest of photography skills and creativity—it’s a test of endurance and stamina. We hope that participants will be inspired by Joseph Schooling’s presence at this year’s competition, drawing upon his tenacity and dedication to achieve big dreams, much like how he secured Singapore’s first Olympic gold medal.”

Living up to its name, the Canon PhotoMarathon merges photography with athleticism. The full-day competition demands both mental and physical endurance. While the competition format remains consistent with three themes revealed throughout the day, this year’s event will commence later, at 11 am.

This later start allows photographers working on the third and final theme to utilize a blend of daylight and artificial light, testing their photography skills and creative vision.

The ‘dusk’ challenge will be announced at 5 pm, with a final submission deadline of 8 pm. Sunset typically occurs after 7 pm.

Participants have three hours from the theme announcement to submit a photo that showcases a unique perspective and composition based on the given theme. For an extra layer of engagement, participants will have a voice in selecting one of this year’s competition themes.

Over S$50,000 worth of Canon products are available as prizes. Furthermore, all registered participants will be entered into a lucky draw for a chance to win a pair of Lufthansa airline tickets to Munich, Germany.

Beyond category prizes, the Best of Show winners from the Open and Student categories will each earn a coveted spot in the Canon PhotoMarathon Asia Championship in 2019, valued at over US$5,000.

This all-expenses-paid trip will take participants on a unique journey to explore various aspects of photography under the guidance of a professional photographer. The championship will include additional themed challenges to determine the overall winner.

Additionally, a charity sale of limited-edition prints, curated by The Straits Times photo desk and The Schooling Company, will run from July 20th to 26th through shop.canon.com.sg/charity. All proceeds will be donated to the STSPMF.
