Cafédirect, a leading UK company specializing in Fairtrade hot drinks, has introduced its award-winning Cafédirect Tarrazu Terroir Roast & Ground Coffee. This coffee originates from the Llano Bonito cooperative in Costa Rica’s Tarrazu region, known for its mountainous terrain and fertile volcanic soil.

Cafédirect Tarrazu Terroir Coffee is made from Caturra and Catuai Arabica beans, known for their low-growing trees that produce a high yield of flavorful beans. The Caturra variety is particularly valued for its exceptional quality and taste. The coffee trees thrive at elevations between 1,200 and 2,000 meters, where warm days and cool nights slow down the plant’s growth, allowing for the development of complex sugars and acids. This high-altitude cultivation also minimizes the need for pesticides.

These specific environmental factors, known as terroir, combined with the dedication of passionate farmers, contribute to the development of mature beans with a refined flavor profile: medium-bodied, pleasantly aromatic, and naturally sweet with hints of peach. Coffees from the Tarrazu region consistently receive high ratings in the Cup of Excellence, an annual competition held by the Alliance for Coffee Excellence to recognize the highest quality coffees.

Cafédirect’s Fairtrade business model ensures that 50% of the profits are reinvested back to the coffee farmers who meticulously cultivate and harvest the beans. This approach not only enhances the livelihoods of the farmers but also elevates the quality of each coffee bean.

Cafédirect is committed to paying fair prices and collaborating directly with smallholder farmers, empowering them to expand their businesses and gain a stronger foothold in competitive commodity markets. The company partners with over 282,000 smallholder farmers across 40 grower organizations in 14 developing nations. Furthermore, growers have ownership in the company and hold two seats on the Cafédirect Board of Directors.
