Huawei has launched its first film awards, the HUAWEI Film Awards (HFA), in the Asia Pacific region. The competition aims to encourage filmmakers and content creators to use Huawei smartphones to demonstrate their creativity.
The HFA’s theme is Empowering Your Possibilities. It begins in Singapore with an event at SCAPE on December 21 at 6 pm. Local director Boris Boo will be the guest of honor, and one of his films will premiere at the event.
Huawei intends for the HFA to encourage innovation and creativity in filmmaking using smartphones. The company wants to demonstrate that mobile filmmaking is viable due to technological advancements that allow for sophisticated camera features in smartphone cameras.
“The HUAWEI Film Awards is an Asia-Pacific festival celebrating work shot on any Huawei mobile phone. Its goal is to discover and support up-and-coming talent. The festival aims to foster local creative talent’s interest in smartphone filmmaking by expanding their ability to create stunning films, giving them a gateway into the world of smartphone filmmaking”, said Phil Xu, Managing Director of Consumer Business Group Singapore.
“We hope this platform will strengthen collaboration between local filmmakers, content creators, and talent, encouraging them to share new filming knowledge, showcase smartphone cinematography skills, and gain recognition nationally and regionally.”
The HFA is accepting submissions from smartphone filmmakers and content creators until February 25, 2020 (11:59 pm, GMT+8). Submissions must be filmed entirely on a Huawei mobile phone, be no longer than 10 minutes, and follow the theme Empowering Your Possibilities.
The judging panel comprises five prominent figures in film and broadcasting: Malaysian film and television producer and screenwriter Adele Lim, Thai postmodern author Prabda Yoon, and Rajay Singh, senior founding partner of film and TV commercial production company Directors Think Tank. They are joined by Alex Lin, Asia Pacific President of Huawei Consumer Business Group, and Chris Humphrey, who oversees regional broadcasting at A+E Networks.
The APAC Best Film winner at the HFA receives $20,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the awards ceremony in Bangkok, Thailand. The HFA winners will be announced regionally on March 6, 2020. The awards include APAC Best Director, APAC Best Cinematography, APAC Best Actor (Male or Female), and Country Level Best Film. All category winners will receive a trophy and a certificate. The Country Level Best Film winner in Singapore will also receive additional prizes.
