Vivid Sydney, a global festival celebrating light, music, and ideas, will illuminate Sydney until June 8th. Last year, the festival drew in 1.43 million attendees.
Stuart Ayres, the NSW Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events, highlighted the festival’s ability to transform Sydney for 18 days and nights with creativity and vibrant light displays. He emphasized it as a must-see event for showcasing the city’s pride.
Sydney’s renowned landmarks, harbor, and urban areas are adorned with 3D projections and over 60 light installations, including a captivating display on the iconic sails of the Sydney Opera House.
Vivid Light extends throughout various locations: The Rocks, Circular Quay, Darling Harbour, Walsh Bay, Martin Place in the Central Business District, The Star & Pyrmont. New additions in 2015 include Central Park in Chippendale, recognized for its award-winning tall building, and Chatswood in the city’s north.
Lighting artists globally were invited to share their creative visions, resulting in 140 artists from 16 countries being selected to contribute their work to Vivid Sydney.
The Vivid Music program offers a cutting-edge music experience, including Vivid LIVE at the Sydney Opera House. With over 90 performances across the city, attendees can enjoy unique collaborations and performances by artists like Grace Jones, Sufjan Stevens, Daniel Johns, and Australia’s own The Hoodoo Gurus.
Vivid Ideas provides a platform for some of the brightest and most innovative minds to engage in talks, seminars, conferences, workshops, and forums. Featuring 150 sessions and over 400 speakers, the program highlights include insights from multi-Emmy-winning writer Matthew Weiner, known for his work on Mad Men and The Sopranos, who will share his experiences in the creative industry.
Sandra Chipchase, Chief Executive Officer of Destination NSW, the State Government’s tourism and major events agency responsible for Vivid Sydney, emphasized the festival’s objective to connect and inspire individuals through a shared and vibrant experience. Chipchase highlighted Vivid Sydney’s role in making art accessible to the public, offering them a visually stunning display of artistic and technical ingenuity.

The renowned Sydney Opera House will undergo a transformation as its sails are illuminated into a vibrant, living mural, a collaborative effort with the UK-based company Universal Everything. Harbour Lights will feature a fleet of boats showcasing a spectrum of colors as they navigate the waterways. Paint The Town empowers visitors to take control of the city’s skyline, illuminating it in a dazzling array of colors.
Those interested can visit the Argyle Cut to experience the narrated work of Sir David Attenborough.
Visitors can immerse themselves in the wonders of nature and listen to the words of Sir David Attenborough at The Argyle Cut, showcased each weeknight from 7 pm and 6 pm on weekends. Life Story, drawing from four years of footage captured for the BBC’s Life Story TV series, will infuse The Argyle Cut with captivating visuals of birds, marine life, and animals.
For a unique experience, attendees can embrace a three-meter-tall crocheted Dolly.
Capture a memorable photo opportunity by giving Dolly a warm hug against the backdrop of the Sydney Opera House and share it using #ilovesydney.
Martin Place offers an engaging space to experience light installations such as Robotanic, Spectra, and Drum Circle. Visitors can challenge friends in Intel’s “a game of drones” and witness the captivating Transcendence installation, which seamlessly blends Intel Real Sense technology, live art projections, and a selection of Sydney’s finest food offerings, including Porteno, Thievery, Agape Organic, Cantina Mobil, and the Cow and the Moon.
Vivid Sydney extends its reach to Chatswood and Sydney University in 2015.
Attendees can explore Chatswood and delve into the underwater adventure of Norbert and The Nautilus. For refreshments, the Cabana Bar and 4 Pines Rooftop Bar at Night Markets at The Concourse offer a delightful retreat.
The University of Sydney presents its Vivid Path to the Future program, commencing on Monday, May 25th. Visitors can expect awe-inspiring building projections and a vibrant music program at the Seymour Centre.
