Canon has introduced the EOS RP, the second camera in their EOS R series of full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras.
The EOS RP is the lightest and most compact camera in Canon’s full-frame lineup, but it still packs impressive capabilities. It boasts the new RF lens mount and Canon’s proprietary technology, including a DIGIC 8 image processor and Dual Pixel CMOS AF for exceptional optical quality.
Significantly smaller than other EOS cameras, the EOS RP weighs only 485g, making it comfortable to use, especially for those new to full-frame cameras. An optional Extension Grip (EG-E1) is available for users who prefer a larger grip.
The EOS RP’s Vari-angle touch-screen LCD allows for shooting from different perspectives and unique compositions. Its customizable electronic viewfinder (EVF) provides 100% coverage with a 2.36 million-dot OLED display, ideal for bright conditions.
“As a companion to the EOS R, Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera, the new EOS RP is designed for photography enthusiasts and amateurs, offering a compact, lightweight body at an attractive price,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore.
“Inspired by the French word ‘populaire,’ meaning ‘popular,’ the EOS RP is envisioned as the everyday consumer’s go-to camera for exceptional image quality.”
Part of Canon’s EOS R System, the EOS RP uses the RF lens mount, which debuted with the EOS R. This mount has a short-flange focal distance of 20mm, allowing for increased lens design possibilities. Current EOS users can still use their EF and EF-S lenses with an optional mount adapter.
The EOS RP reflects the familiar strengths of Canon’s EOS system, including reliable performance and excellent ergonomics. Powered by Canon’s DIGIC 8 image processor, the EOS RP delivers outstanding image quality in various situations. The Auto Lighting Optimizer balances light and dark areas to enhance image details, resulting in well-exposed images even in challenging lighting. Equipped with a 26.2-megapixel Full-Frame CMOS sensor, the EOS RP captures vibrant images with sharp details. The native ISO range of 100-40,000, expandable to 50-102,400, ensures low-noise images with rich details, even in low light.
The EOS RP’s Dual Sensing IS system detects camera shake using a gyroscopic sensor and CMOS sensor data. This allows for image stabilization up to five stops slower shutter speeds, proving particularly useful in low-light conditions. The built-in Digital Lens Optimiser corrects for aberrations, diffraction, and optical distortions during shooting, producing excellent image quality straight from the camera.
Featuring Dual Pixel CMOS AF, the EOS RP achieves fast autofocus speeds of up to 0.05 seconds, capturing fleeting moments with ease. The camera provides 4,779 selectable AF positions covering nearly 100% vertically and 88% horizontally of the frame, offering compositional freedom. With a minimum AF luminance of EV -5, the EOS RP focuses accurately even in dimly lit environments.
Eye Detection AF, operational even in Servo AF mode, ensures the subject’s eye remains in focus even at wide apertures, proving especially helpful when subjects are moving. For situations requiring minimal disturbance, the camera’s Silent Mode allows shooting without shutter release sounds.
For images with extensive depth of field, where the entire scene is in focus, the EOS RP’s Focus Bracketing feature is valuable, particularly for macro photography. It captures a series of photos with pre-determined settings like the number of shots, focusing range, and the initial focus point. These images can then be merged to create the final image using Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software.
With Dual Pixel CMOS AF, the EOS RP records videos in 4K resolution at 24p/25p, allowing for precise focusing and smooth footage. Touch & Drag AF enables pull-focus effects and focus transitions by simply moving a finger across the LCD screen. Combination IS, made possible by the enhanced communication between the sensor and the lens through the RF mount, delivers steady footage even without a tripod.
When recording video with an RF lens, users can make ⅛-stop aperture adjustments, allowing for precise exposure control to match lighting conditions. During manual shooting, the MF Peaking function assists in achieving accurate focus by highlighting in-focus areas.
In addition to charging with the included external charger, the EOS RP supports quick charging via the optional USB Power Adapter PD-E1 using its Hi-Speed (USB 2.0/Type C) interface.
Transferring images from the EOS RP to a smart device or computer is seamless using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). The Canon Camera Connect mobile app enables various network-related functions. When paired with a smartphone, the automatic data transfer feature can send photos during capture, simplifying photo management and removing the need for manual transfers.

Canon also outlined their roadmap for six new RF lenses to be released in 2019. The large diameter and short back focus of the RF mount system allow for these new optical designs.
RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM
This ultra-wide zoom lens features a wide f/2.8 maximum aperture. Suitable for landscapes, the RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM provides an expansive field of view ideal for close-quarters shooting. The 15mm to 35mm focal length range makes it versatile for various subjects, from everyday shots to wedding photography. Image stabilization ensures excellent performance in low-light conditions.
RF24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM
This L-series standard zoom lens maintains a large f/2.8 maximum aperture while being compact enough for everyday use. The RF24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is expected to excel as an all-around lens, especially in low light.
RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
This popular telephoto zoom lens now comes in a significantly smaller form factor. With a maximum aperture of f/2.8 and image stabilization, the RF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM delivers exceptional shooting experience for sports, weddings, wildlife, and even landscapes.
RF85mm f/1.2L USM
This L-series medium telephoto prime lens offers impressive edge-to-edge resolution even at its maximum aperture of f/1.2.
RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS
Sharing the high performance and specifications of the RF85mm f/1.2L USM, the RF85mm f/1.2L USM DS introduces Canon’s Defocus Smoothing (DS) effect, achieved through a new coating technology. This produces softer and smoother bokeh, a result previously unattainable with conventional optics.
RF24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM
This compact, lightweight zoom lens covers a versatile range from 24mm to 240mm (10x zoom). It serves as a valuable addition to the EOS R system for both stills and video.
