Beogram 4002 Type 5513: Initial Assessment

A Beogram 4002 turntable, dropped off by its long-time owner, appears to have been well-maintained.

The control panel buttons show typical wear from use, but the dust cover is in good condition with only minor marks. The tonearm requires adjustment as it sits too low when the turntable is not in use.

The turntable’s interior is very clean, suggesting it was kept in a good environment.

The original washers for the floating suspension lock-down are intact. They appear dry but have not deteriorated like many others. Applying plastic restoration cream should restore them.

Closer inspection reveals the tonearm components are intact, suggesting a service manual adjustment may be sufficient.

Initial operational tests show all buttons function and the turntable operates. However, due to the tonearm requiring adjustment, playing a record is not advisable at this time. The turntable runs smoothly, but the LED for the carriage position sensor is out. The tangential tracking lamp and record sensor in the fixed arm are functional.

A detailed check of sensor signals will be conducted later.

Below are additional photos of the Beogram 4002 Type 5513’s interior.

The interior is in excellent condition and very clean. The tangential drive screw pulley is in good shape, with no apparent cracks. The platter motor is functional, but being over forty years old, its two bearings likely need lubrication. It will be sent to Beolover for refurbishment.

The initial assessment suggests the platter motor requires refurbishment by Beolover. Mechanical adjustments, according to the service manual, are needed. Additionally, all sensor voltages need checking, and the carriage position sensor needs a new LED. It is recommended to replace the electrolytic capacitors and platter speed trimmers. For optimal platter motor stability, changing the two speed indication lamps on the display panel is advisable, as they are part of the analog control circuit. Cosmetically, the dust cover would benefit from polishing, and the control panel could use restoration.

While hidden issues may exist, the Beogram 4002 presents in excellent condition as a starting point for restoration. This turntable serves as a prime example of why a forty-year-old device requires thorough inspection and adjustment. Despite its age and good condition, proper servicing will restore it to peak functionality and capability.
