The Beogram 4002 (5523) I recently refurbished had a very scratched lid. Fortunately, the hinges were undamaged, and the inside of the lid was in good condition, with only a few minor cleaning marks. This made it worthwhile to try to restore the lid to an acceptable condition. The photo below shows the condition of the lid when I received the Beogram:
Because some scratches were deep enough to feel with a fingernail, I began by using 400-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface:
This process removed all the deep scratches and the lighter ones, creating a uniform matte finish. From this starting point, I could begin polishing the lid back to its original shine using progressively finer sandpaper. After my usual seven-step polishing process, the lid was translucent again and looked much better:
While these polishing techniques can significantly improve the appearance, they cannot fully restore the lid to its original factory-fresh condition. Nevertheless, the result is a vast improvement over the initial state.
Many 400x series lids are missing the rubber bumpers designed to soften the sound of the lid closing. The picture below highlights one of the missing bumpers. Typically, some rubber residue remains in the mounting holes:
Before installing new rubber bumpers, this residue needs to be removed. I use a 2mm drill bit to remove the degraded rubber from the holes:
Once the holes are cleaned, I install new rubber bumpers. I use pieces of 2mm O-rings, which I glue into the holes using superglue gel. After the gel hardens, I trim the O-ring pieces to a length of 1mm relative to the surface of the lid:
With the new bumpers in place, the lid now makes the original soft “thud” sound when it closes. Beautiful!
