Beogram 4002: New Project From Houston

My next project takes me away from Beomaster restorations and back to Beogram turntables. It’s great to work on both, so I’m excited regardless. A gentleman from Houston entrusted me with two Beogram 4002 Type 5513 turntables he acquired some years ago. As time took its toll, they stopped functioning properly.  Like many Beogram 4002 owners, he realized he missed listening to his vinyl records and decided to have them restored.  I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to bring these back to their full glory.

But one step at a time.

The turntables were in decent condition, having been operational until recently. Here’s a look at the first Beogram turntable opened up.

Back in March, I removed and sent the DC platter motors to Beolover for a complete restoration. Now that they’re back, I can finally continue with the rest of the restoration process.

Some areas within this Beogram show significant rust, which I’ll clean and treat to prevent further damage.

The Beogram’s phono DIN plug is also severely corroded and will need replacement.

Below are images highlighting the rusty chassis components.

This Beogram 4002 is a rare find; its plastic transport bushings around the floating suspension locking screw are still intact, soft, and in excellent shape. Most units I come across have brittle, cracked bushings that have crumbled inside the Beogram. I’ll apply a plastic restoration fluid to these bushings to prevent them from drying out.

The main circuit board appears to be in excellent condition, with no visible signs of heat damage or corrosion.

Similarly, the tangential arm assembly also appears to be in good shape.

To restore this turntable to its former glory, I plan to recap the main board, replace the relays, speed trimmers, and clean and adjust the tonearm mechanics. The restored platter motor, new trimmers, and Beolover’s LED replacement modules for the speed indicator lamps will make this Beogram spin vinyl records better than ever.

Time to get started.
