Beogram 4002 (5523): Polishing of the In- and Outside of the Hood

After installing a new remote control and internal pre-amplifier, the final touch on this Beogram 4002 (5523) was polishing its dust cover. While the outside showed typical scratches, the inside had an unusually large scratch as well.

Polishing the inside is more challenging because the polishing tool can hit the corners. However, because this scratch was situated away from the edges, it could be addressed. The technique involved gradually widening the polished area with each step. This ensured that any fine scratches from the previous step were removed, resulting in a smooth finish. Here’s the initial stage using 320 grit sandpaper:

After a series of ten polishing stages, the inside of the dust cover regained its shine:

Next, the outside was addressed. Here is its initial condition:

And the final outcome after restoring its translucency:

Finally, new rubber bumpers were installed on the dust cover. These provide a satisfying ’thunk’ sound when closing the cover, unlike the less refined sound without them. One of the missing bumpers is shown here:

They were drilled out with a 2mm drill bit:

Then, O-ring pieces were glued in place:

These were then trimmed to size using a razor blade and a custom 3D-printed template, leaving approximately 1mm to maintain the correct angle of the dust cover when closed:

Here’s the completed result:

The restoration is complete and ready to be enjoyed by its owner!
