Beogram 4000: Restoring the Hood

I finally decided to refurbish the dust cover of the Beogram 4000 turntable from Norway, a task that takes me around 3 hours. I had been putting it off because I was enjoying working on a custom transformer for a Beomaster 4000 receiver.

As is common with vintage turntables, the dust cover on this Beogram 4000 was showing its age. It had numerous scratches and blemishes, as you can see here:

To begin, I leveled the surface using 220-grit sandpaper. Then, using a Micro-Mesh polishing kit, I polished it until it was translucent again:

After thoroughly cleaning the dust cover, I replaced the rubber bumpers on the front corners. These bumpers ensure the dust cover sits level and provide a smoother closing action. The original bumpers were completely gone, leaving only their mounting stubs in the dust cover:

A 2mm drill bit was used to remove the remaining pieces of the old bumpers:

I then glued small sections of 2mm diameter O-rings into the holes:

To guarantee a level dust cover, I used a 3D-printed red square as a guide to cut the rubber pieces to the proper length on both sides:

The last step was to replace the screw that was being used as the right side hinge. It was replaced with the original metal rod that was included with the turntable:

After installing the rod:

A much-needed improvement! With that, the Beogram 4000 restoration is complete. I will test it thoroughly to ensure everything is in working order before returning it to its owner.
