The decision to move forward with the waste-to-hydrogen project was reached during a signing ceremony attended by Chinook Sciences Chairman and CEO, Dr Rifat Chalabi (front left), HE Salim Al Owais (front right), Chairman of Bee’ah, and representatives from both organizations.

This project, a collaboration with UK-based industrial renewable fuel and environmental technology firm Chinook Sciences, encompasses a green hydrogen production facility and a hydrogen vehicle refueling station.

The project’s development into a waste-to-hydrogen initiative was formalized during a signing ceremony with Chinook Sciences Chairman and CEO, Dr. Rifat Chalabi, HE Salim Al Owais, Chairman of Bee’ah, and other high-ranking officials. Strategically located beside the refueling station, the waste-to-hydrogen plant addresses the issue of expensive hydrogen transportation. This plant will process non-recyclable plastic and wood waste, producing green hydrogen to power hydrogen vehicles at the station.

HE Salim emphasized, “Green hydrogen is a crucial element of our future energy strategy. Aligned with our long-term goal of developing sustainable energy solutions, Bee’ah, in partnership with Chinook, has been actively exploring this market. As sustainability pioneers, we are dedicated to supporting the UAE’s hydrogen economy goals, energy diversification, and decarbonization initiatives.”

HE Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of Bee’ah, operating in the UAE, KSA, and Egypt, stated, “As a frontrunner in Middle Eastern waste management, we are proud to spearhead the region’s first waste-to-hydrogen solution. This project will demonstrate the potential of waste-to-hydrogen technology. Bee’ah has consistently recognized the importance of energy recovery from waste, and with this project, we aim to bolster a multi-faceted circular economy across the region.”

Dr. Rifat, Chairman and CEO of Chinook Sciences explained, “We are thrilled to implement Chinook Sciences’ patented RODECS gasification and pyrolysis technology in the UAE. This technology uses advanced thermal treatment to break down hydrocarbons in waste, releasing and capturing green hydrogen. Using green hydrogen in vehicles produces only water and zero carbon emissions.”

Dr. Rifat added, “By employing Chinook’s RODECS technology, we can achieve cost-effective green hydrogen production, potentially matching or even undercutting the price of diesel and gasoline. At peak capacity, this plant could fuel 1,000 large hydrogen-powered vehicles daily.”

The UAE has declared its ambition to become a leading hydrogen producer, aiming to cut carbon emissions by 24% by 2030. This includes investments in green hydrogen generated from renewables like solar power and carbon-capture technologies for producing blue hydrogen.
