Becky’s Minibed Garden in 2018
In late 2016, after trying numerous gardening techniques over many years, I created a new method I initially called “Minibeds-on-Plastic,” now simplified to “Minibed Gardening.”
At a glance, Minibed gardening might seem ordinary, appearing as small beds covered in plastic mulch. Its uniqueness lies in the bed layout and management, a concept I call “high-culture” gardening. This approach prioritizes soil health and creates an ideal environment for plant growth, encompassing more than initially apparent.
For two years, I’ve been experimenting with Minibed gardening, putting my concepts into practice. The results have been positive, yielding productive and fulfilling outcomes.
Witnessing others adopt and benefit from Minibed gardening has been even more rewarding. Becky M., residing in northern Illinois, about an hour southwest of Chicago (zone 5), sent me the photo above, showcasing her garden. Her comment highlights her success:
“After purchasing your garden book and the first update, I transitioned my garden to minibeds last year. The change was remarkable! I encountered a few hurdles and learned from them. Overall, my 45 mini-beds flourished. At 66, with knee issues, weeding my traditional garden almost led me to quit. Thankfully, I discovered your book and took the leap!”
Becky’s Minibed garden surpasses mine. Here are more photos from her initial year (click for larger views):
These “before” photos depict her garden in spring, with plastic mulch and Minibed frames set up:
Lastly, another inspiring snapshot from Becky:
If these photos don’t motivate you to start gardening this spring, it’s hard to say what will! Gardening, in my opinion, is a positive and fruitful activity, especially in a world full of turmoil and uncertainty.
Inspired by the success and satisfaction of Minibed gardening, I’ve created a new resource, available as of yesterday:
“The Minibed Gardening Trilogy,” a 130-page collection of my annual Minibed gardening reports from 2017-2019, featuring 250 photos, details the background, concepts, and best practices of this gardening system.
This downloadable PDF resource, priced at $17.95, is available at a discounted price of $12.95 until March 16th. Click here to order.
To learn more before purchasing, visit the Minibed Gardening website.
Note: Those who purchased previous yearly reports already have the first two parts of this trilogy and should have received an email regarding the 30-page 2019 update (priced at $2.95). If you haven’t received this email, contact me at herrick@planetwhizbang.com for more information.
